The Cock in St Albans, like Bar 62, is another pub that has been smartened up a few years back in an apparent effort to attract the more middle-aged well off drinkers rather than the young crowd.
The back of the pub has been turned into a separate dining area so the drinkers are squeezed into the small front bar. Most of the time there is sufficient room to feel comfortable although it does get crowded at the weekend.
Food is served at lunchtime and evenings with bar food available at the front bar and a full menu available in the back restaurant section.
The Cock has a good selection of real ale. Green King IPA is normally available with one or two other ales. At the time of this visit Tom Woods ale was available, which was excellent. There is also a good selection of wine available.
Service is good and friendly and the place in general has a good atmosphere. There is one plasma screen for showing the football, but the volume is kept to a minimum - not always a bad thing.
The restaurant at the back of the Cock has a reputation for good food. However, I'm sure many would prefer the rear area to be converted back to a drinking area.
Comfy sofas are available but you will need to get in early to claim one. Alternatively the bar stools next to the window are great for looking out and watching the world go by.
This is a nice pub with traditional beams, good beer and one to feel comfortable in.

Update Sept 2009:
After visiting the Cock many times over the last few years I've finally found the patio/garden!
It's a lovely partially heated area with around twelve tables. Food can be served outside.
Well worth making the effort to find it - the entrance is between the bar area and restaurant, near to the toilets.
Slightly disappointing choice of ales - only Old Speckled Hen and Abbott available.
It's a Green King pub but there always used to be one or two interesting guest ales.

"Lovely pub! I actually really like the front bar area, yes it gets busy on the weekends but it part of the charm, at least you don't ever feel lonely. The food is always beautifully presented and taste great. I've had a few lunches at The Cock and £7.95 for a 2 course meal is very reasonable, especially if you know that its not a microwave reheated "pub grub". I recommend this pub to everyone! 10/10"

"This pub was once pleasant but now seems to have a pub fight every night. Rude staff and violent locals squashed in with a posh eating area make this a very odd pub indeed. When I visited this pub everybody was told last orders were at 1 and kicking out time was 1.30 and then at 1.10 the lights outside were switched off and the ghastly Aussie manager approached the table and started rudely intimidating our group and insisting we leave immediately or else he'd call the police before returning to drink with his friends. Nobody dared finish their drinks before leaving. My rating: 1/10"
